From Hesitation to Awe: My Journey Through Morocco

When my nephew decided to spend a semester studying at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco suddenly became part of our family’s conversation. He was excited and adventurous — ready to embrace something new. I, however, felt something very different.

If I’m honest, my first reaction to visiting Morocco was hesitation. Maybe it was the fear of the unknown. Maybe it was stepping outside my comfort zone in a place that felt culturally and geographically far from what I was used to. Whatever it was, I felt it strongly.

But sometimes the best journeys begin with uncertainty.

My sister, Ben, and I decided to make the trip together — partly to support my nephew as he started this exciting chapter, and partly to challenge our own sense of adventure. Looking back now, I can say without hesitation…

WOW. What an experience.

The Journey Begins

Our travels took us through several incredible cities, each offering its own personality and perspective. We began in Marrakech, continued to Casablanca and Rabat, then traveled to Fez before finally reaching Ifrane to help settle my nephew into Al Akhawayn University.

Each destination unfolded like a new chapter in a story I never expected to be so captivated by.

A Country Painted in Color

One of the first things that struck me was Morocco’s unapologetic vibrancy. Standing in front of bowls filled with brilliant colored powders, I remember thinking how perfectly they captured the spirit of the country itself — layered, bold, and alive with contrast.

Morocco doesn’t ease you into its beauty. It surrounds you with it.

Evenings That Felt Timeless

As night fell, Morocco transformed into something almost cinematic. Sitting near the Kasbah Café, watching lantern light spill onto the streets, I felt myself slowing down in a way I rarely do at home.

There was a warmth in the evening air — conversations drifting through the streets, the hum of city life, and centuries-old architecture glowing under soft lights. It felt like time was stretching, inviting me to simply exist in the moment.

Craftsmanship That Speaks Through Generations

Walking into spaces adorned with carved cedar ceilings and intricate tilework was breathtaking. Every detail felt intentional, every pattern layered with history.

Standing beneath those ornate ceilings, I couldn’t help but think about the generations of artisans whose skills and traditions are preserved in every carved line and painted tile. Morocco doesn’t just display art — it lives inside it.

Getting Lost in the Medina (And Loving It)

The medina in Fez was unlike anything I had experienced. Narrow alleyways twisted in every direction, opening suddenly into bustling marketplaces, quiet corners, and workshops filled with life.

At times, I had absolutely no sense of direction — and surprisingly, that became one of my favorite parts. Every wrong turn led to discovery. The medina taught me to stop trying to control the journey and instead trust where curiosity led me.

Witnessing Tradition in Motion

Visiting the leather tanneries was fascinating and humbling. From above, the dye pits created patterns that almost looked artistic. But witnessing the physical labor and centuries-old methods behind the craft gave me an entirely new appreciation for the finished products.

Watching hides drying and transforming into beautiful materials was a reminder of how deeply tradition and livelihood are connected in Moroccan culture.

Food That Invites You to Slow Down

Meals in Morocco felt like shared experiences rather than just dining. Plates filled with fresh salads, vibrant olives, and richly spiced dishes introduced me to flavors that were both unfamiliar and unforgettable.

Every meal encouraged conversation, connection, and savoring each bite.

Seeing Morocco From Above

Looking out over Fez revealed a city that seemed endless — rooftops layered together like a living mosaic. It gave me a moment to pause and appreciate how ancient history and modern life coexist so naturally here.
